WHAT ARE DERIVATIVES?

A derivative is a financial contract to trade an asset at the predetermined price. That asset is called underlying asset.

Underlying can be gold, oil, currency pairs, fund index,  temperature of the weather and etc. The value of the derivate is determined by the price of the underlying asset. Derivatives can be used to hedge againist price risks or for speculation purposes.

Futures

Future is a financial contract obliging the contracting parties to buy and to sell the underlying asset at the predetermined price and date. The buyer agrees to buy the asset, and the seller agrees to deliver the asset. Futures are traded at the Futures Exchanges, and the operations are regulated.

GC AUG29`[email protected] NYMEX: is a future contract of Gold trading at the New-York's Goods Exchange on 29 August 2017

Options

Options give the right to the holders to buy and to sell certain asset at the predetermined date and price. The buyer of the option has right to exercise the option, but should pay premium for it. In case buyer exercises the option the sellers has an obligation to fullfill the contract.

Strike: The predetermined price in the contract

Expiration date: The date on which the contract terminates

Example: 

CLV7 SEP 20`17 FUT C4750- is the call option of the oil futures trading on New York Commodity Exchange on 20.09.2017.
